Demolition work is high-risk. Appointing a competent Demolition Supervisor is not only a legal requirement under Construction Regulation 14(1), but also critical to ensuring the safety of everyone on site.

 

Who is a Demolition Supervisor?

A Demolition Supervisor is a competent person—appointed in writing—to oversee and manage all demolition-related activities. This person must have the necessary qualifications, experience, and leadership skills to ensure safe execution of the work.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Supervision of Demolition Activities
  2. Oversee manual, mechanical, and explosive demolition operations.
  3. Ensure all workers are following the approved method statement and risk assessments.
  4. Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment
  5. Identify site-specific hazards (e.g., asbestos, unstable structures).
  6. Develop risk assessments and control measures to mitigate these risks.
  7. Safety Planning and Implementation
  8. Create and implement fall protection, rescue plans, and emergency procedures.
  9. Ensure all workers have the correct PPE and know how to use it.
  10. Compliance with Regulations
  11. Ensure work complies with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Construction Regulations.
  12. Make sure only qualified personnel perform specific tasks (e.g., handling DBs, using machinery).
  13. Training and Communication
  14. Conduct safety briefings and ensure all workers are trained in safe demolition practices.
  15. Maintain open communication and lead by example.
  16. Reporting and Record-Keeping
  17. Report incidents, near misses, and non-compliance.
  18. Keep accurate records of inspections, training, and meetings.
  19. Health and Safety File Management
  20. Keep the demolition section of the safety file updated and available for inspection.

  2. Always follow the sequence in the demolition method statement.
  3. Keep unauthorised personnel away from the demolition zone.
  4. Stop work immediately if unsafe conditions are identified.
